About Us

Deutsche Evangelische St. Johannes Gemeinde Zu Gravois Settlement Missouri was founded in 1838 by newly arrived German immigrants. They were living in a wilderness farming community a day's journey south of St. Louis. The small congregation built a church out of logs by hand on this hill. The church grew and changed with the community. We now occupy our third church building, with the sanctuary built in 1923 and additions added in 1953, & 1970 From the beginning, the hearts and hands of the congregation have carried out God's work. Worship, prayer and Christian Education are our foundation. Strong on-going support of a wide range of missions--many of them "helping others help themselves", has always been a priority. In the early days it was gathering in farm produce for the Harvest Home Festival to give to the Evangelical Children's Home and supporting other German Evangelical Missions and Schools.

Church Structure

St. Johns is governed by an elected Church Council. Our programs and ministries are carried out through various commissions and committees that are open to all members who wish to serve.

Our Beliefs

We proclaim and acknowledge Jesus Christ as the Son of God and our Savior, the sole head of the Church, and claim as kindred all who share this confession. Although we worship within the historic Evangelical and Reformed tradition, our worship seeks to be meaningful and uplifting.
We affirm the primacy of the Scriptures, the doctrines and creeds of the Reformed tradition, the priesthood of all believers, and the principle of Christian freedom.

We celebrate two sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion.
Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, as well as on special occasions such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter. We invite all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to participate and partake in the sacrament.
Baptisms are performed on request. Click here if you would like to schedule a Baptism at St. Johns.
